How To Create Goals When Dieting

Setting Goals is one of the most important things you can do when dieting. If you look back at your life and remember all these things you achieved and all of the projects you successfully completed, did it ever occur to you that all of this happened because you had an objective and and a specific plan to reach that objective in mind? So maybe you are guessing now where I'm going with this article. How does goal setting and dieting fit together?

Well obviously, if you don't know where you want to go how would you know when you actually get there in the end? And even more important how would you know whether whatever you're doing is helping you achieve that goal or detrimental to your nonexistent objective. You can't because you don't have a compass. It should be clear to see now that setting Objectives can only influence your chance at success in a good way. A goal is like a flagpole in the distance that grows larger the closer you come. This helps you to easily see how far you've come. This is required for you to see if your efforts are paying out or not or if you have to change what you are doing. To make things short, an objective helps you to see if you can relax a little with your diet plan or if you have to become even stricter.

I hope you are now with me and agree with me that having Goals to strife for can only aid you in your diet project. If not, you are a setting yourself up for failure. If you are still with me, let's see now how to go about setting up the Objectives. The Goals you set for yourself should be within possible reach and not defy reality. If the Goals are too easy you don't achieve anything really, do you? If you want to loose 1 lbs a year, good on you but that, well, how long do you think you keep at it? You need some visible success otherwise you drop the diet sooner than later. You don't want to end in that trap, so make sure that your diet Goals are reasonable. If you don't know that, see what other individuals around you managed to achieve.

Another very important goal setting rule is to be specific with the amount you want to lose. Guess which of these rules achieves to hold you accountable more? "I am going to loose 80 pounds over the next three years." or "In four week, I will weigh 10 pounds less." After achieving the first short term goal, the next short term goal should be as easily achieved. See what I am getting at here? If you can lose 10 pounds once, what deters you from doing it once more? And again? Nothing, that what. This might be only a trick and the result might be the same, but it works. Just chain up some small Goals to get to one big end objective. Strifing for smallish Goals more often gives you sense of achievement more often. That's why it works so well.

Now what happens when you miss a goal? Do not give up I say. Instead of giving up you should just look if it was you or the goal that was wrong. If it was you, adjust your behaviour, if it was the goal - adjust the goal.

And before I forget: The objectives you are setting have to be YOUR Goals and not Goals imposed on you by someone else. If the objective is not your personal wish for bettering yourself and your life, the motivation to stick to the goal is just not there. If you are not dedicated to achieving whatever goal you set for yourself, you could also just leave it at that and go home.

Help to motivate yourself by using rewards for each achieved subgoal. Regularly reward yourself for each little achievement you reach. Go to the spa or treat yourself to a lazy sunday once in a while! And this, my friend, is how you set yourself up for a successful diet.
